Yes, Trump’s Budget Bill Is Really That Bad, That Cruel, and That Billionaire Friendly

Cuts to Medicaid. Sale of public land. The big, stupid wall. It’s a conservative wish list, and Christmas came early.
To keep awake, I decided to examine exactly what is tucked into the OBBB that isn’t connected to the economy but, rather, to a conservative wish list generally. For example, the OBBB eliminates a $200 tax on firearms silencers that has been federal law since 1934.
The OBBB would end Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood and the tax exemptions of organizations that the administration deems are associated with “terrorism.” It mandates a ten-year moratorium on state actions to regulate AI. (States rights!)
The OBBB mandates $46.5 billion to restart construction of the president’s big, stupid wall. It also requires people seeking asylum to pony up $1,000 for the privilege, which the U.S. never has done but is business as usual in Iran. It also proposes funding to hold 100,000 migrants in detention centers yet to be built.
It is positively a piñata for the Department of Defense. There’s $150 billion of new spending, including $25 billion for the “Golden Dome,” the president’s pipe dream of a missile-defense program.
It would open public lands for drilling and mining and, in a late addition, the sale of hundreds of thousands of acres of public land in the West.
Meanwhile, outside the committee room, the only hope of stalling this rough beast of a bill is the desire of hardcore conservatives to make it even worse. This is a cul-de-sac in hell.
