The City of Minneapolis is assessing the damage inflicted by Operation Metro Surge as it reaches its apparent end.

Minneapolis officials claim that the immigration enforcement operation involving around 3,000 federal agents caused the local economy to lose at least $203 million in January alone.

That includes $81 million in lost revenue for small businesses, particularly restaurants, and $47 million in lost wages for people who were too scared to go to work, according to estimates by the city.

"The damage caused by this operation has been staggering," Mayor Jacob Frey said during a Friday news conference.

"It begs the question: Was it worth it? Was the chaos worth it? Was the fear worth it? he asked. "Certainly, this operation did not improve safety, and it indeed decimated trust."

Approximately 76,000 residents experienced food insecurity and thousands of school-age children required mental health services, in January, while an undetermined amount were evicted due to their inability to pay rent.

But the city's director of emergency management, Rachel Sayre, thinks the results of the newly released impact assessment "are almost certainly undercounts."

Minneapolis is now calling on the federal government for "direct financial assistance" to help support small businesses and residents that have been most impacted. It's also asking the state government to step in.

"This has been an emergency caused by the federal government, and so it's all the more important that they also participate in the recovery from the damage that they themselves have caused," Frey said.
