Prime Minister Ahmad al-Rahawi and several ministers were killed in an Israeli strike Thursday on Sanaa, the Houthis said.

Israel has killed the head of the Houthi government in Yemen, the rebel group said Saturday.

Prime Minister Ahmad al-Rahawi and several ministers were killed in an Israeli strike Thursday on Sanaa, the Houthis said in a statement carried by Saba News Agency, the group’s official news platform. Several ministers were wounded in the attack, their Al-Masirah satellite television reported.

The Israel Defense Forces said Thursday it had “precisely struck a Houthi terrorist regime military target in the area of Sanaa in Yemen.” At the time, no injuries were reported.

The leaders were attending a “routine workshop” in the Yemeni capital to evaluate the government’s activities, the Houthis said.

Rahawi, who had headed the Houthi government since 2024, will be replaced by his deputy, Muhammad Ahmad Ahmad Miftah, according to al-Masirah TV.

The Houthi rebels, led by Abdul-Malik al-Houthi and backed by Iran, have been firing missiles toward Israel for the past 22 months in retaliation for Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Israel has intercepted most of the missiles and has repeatedly struck Houthi-controlled territory in response.

The rebels have also targeted commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

In May, the Trump administration halted the air campaign it had launched against the rebels in response to the missiles and ship attacks.
