President Donald Trump has ordered 2,000 members of the California National Guard to be deployed to Los Angeles to intervene in protests of immigration sweeps, a move condemned by California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D). Early Sunday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the National Guard had yet to be deployed to any sites in the county. The White House activation of the National Guard marks a major escalation in the city after protests erupted over ICE raids, part of what the president has said would amount to the largest-scale deportation operation in the country’s history. The protests began after federal officials conducted immigration sweeps in Los Angeles County on Friday.
