Marc Ash Reader Supported NewsThe DNC (DNC Services Inc.) and their media minions have decided that Susan Collins, yes Susan Collins would apparently be better than Progressive challenger Graham Platner, control of the United States be damned. The DNC and Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer made no secret of their preference for Janet Mills. A desperate attempt is now underway by the DNC and deep-pocked media organizations in the Democratic orbit to resurrect the Senate campaign of the Maine Governor.
A multi-pronged assault has been underway on the reputation of Progressive challenger Graham Platner for nearly two weeks in the run-up to the Maine Democratic primary. While there isn’t evidence of collaboration between the DNC and left leaning media outlets the timing and the uniformity of messaging certainly cross the line of creating a public perception of cooperation.
Chuck Schumer actively recruited Janet Mills to challenge Susan Collins for the Senate seat she has held since 1997. The problem is for Schumer and DNC leadership writ large is that those choices are supposed to be the domain of the voters. It’s called representative democracy, the voters get to choose who they want to represent them. The DNC has over the years developed a nasty reputation for blurring and when necessary ignoring the line.
Did Graham Platner physically abuse the accuser and former girlfriend quoted by the New York Times, Lyndsey Fifield? Fifield says yes Platner is an abuser. Platner’s current wife Amy Gertner has defended him in this social media post on X. She has called the allegations “shameful” saying further, "It makes me really angry, disappointed, and I find it really shameful that there's a group of media outlets and people who are willing to spread gossip, instead of talking about real issues that Graham is running on, like healthcare and education and childcare.”
All accusations of domestic partner abuse are serious but it bears noting that Fifield expressed frustration with the New York Times for repeatedly telling her, “We need more.” Apparently the editors at the times felt they had enough to go as far as they did, but no farther.
Belatedly national reporters are starting to interview Maine voters about what they make of all this. The general sense is that there is concern but not much outrage at this stage. Platner says he feels strong enough to continue and he is likely to prevail in Tuesday’s Democratic primary against the mostly, but not completely withdrawn Mills.
Domestic partner abuse is always a concern, particularly when adequately documented. But politically motivated smear campaigns are a serious concern as well. Would the DNC prefer Susan Collins over Graham Platner? Let’s hope not.
