California Governor Gavin Newsom taunted the Trump administration late Sunday amid reports that he could be arrested as protests spiraled out of control in Los Angeles.

“Trump’s border czar is threatening to arrest me for speaking out,” Newsom wrote on X. Come and get me, tough guy. I don’t give a (expletive). It won’t stop me from standing up for California.”

His statement came after Donald Trump’s “Border Czar” Tom Homan told NBC that Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass could both be arrested if they oppose the president’s deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops in the city.

“If you cross that line, it’s a felony to knowingly harbor and conceal an illegal alien,” Homan said. “It’s a felony to impede law enforcement from doing their job. If they cross the line, we’ll ask the DOJ to prosecute.”

“I care about my community, and I care about this community,” Newsom told MSNBC after challenging Homan. “The hell are they doing? These guys need to grow up. They need to stop, and we need to push back, and I’m sorry to be so clear, but that kind of bloviating is exhausting. So, Tom, arrest me.

“Let’s go.”

Newsom clapped back as he continued to accuse Trump of intentionally making the situation worse. Hours after taunting Homan, Newsom reshared a post that said that LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said, “This thing has gotten out of control,” when asked if the National Guard was needed.

“Let’s get this straight: 1. Local law enforcement didn’t need help,” Newsom wrote. “2. Trump sent troops anyway — to manufacture chaos and violence. 3. Trump succeeded. 4. Now things are destabilized, and we need to send in more law enforcement just to clean up Trump’s mess.”

Newsom also shared an MSNBC interview in which he was asked if the protests and demonstrations were all about immigration enforcement.

“I think it’s something much more,” Newsom said. “This is about authoritarian tendencies. This is about command and control. This is about power. This about ego. My way or the highway. This is a consistent pattern of practice of recklessness. This guy has abandoned the core principles of this great democracy. He’s threatening to go after judges he disagrees with, cut off funding to institutions of higher learning. He’s on a cultural binge. He’s rewriting history, censoring historical facts. I mean, this is something completely different, and this is part of that ongoing play that is unfolding in front of our eyes. It is a serious moment under the guise of immigration, but it is much deeper than that.”
